gold rush history and striking scenery – rolling, grassy
hills sprinkled with deep green oak and pine trees, rocky gorges and
wildflowers – make this ideal for both family adventures and
family vacations. The location offers the very best of what O.A.R.S.
family vacations have to offer. From rafting to panning for gold, our
family vacations include four days of resort-based activities, all
meals and three nights of camping in one fun-filled family adventure
package.
Your home away from home lies on the banks of the
American River, which runs through the heart of California's Gold
Country. This river was the lifeblood of the California's gold rush in
the late 1840's. Our Sierra Nevada family vacations will take you to
the grassy foothills of the Sierra Nevada's, which hid an enormous
amount of wealth along their streams and rivers until 1848, when James
Marshall discovered the first gold on the South Fork. By the end of the
following year, hundreds of thousands of explorers from all over the
world –known now as “49ers” –
flocked to the Sierra foothills seeking their fortune from, as one San
Francisco entrepreneur called it, “gold, gold, gold, from the
American River.”
Today, gold is still mined along the river, and as
it continues to erode deeper deposits can still be found. But the main
attraction of the South Fork is no longer the riches that may lay
beneath the river. Today, outdoor enthusiasts find a new kind of
treasure along this stretch of river: a wealth of whitewater and
outstanding Class III rapids has made the South Fork of the American
California's most popular destination for both whitewater rafting and
family vacations.
